Nuclear Hydrodynamics in the Inner Crust of Neutron Stars

چکیده

In the inner crust of a neutron star, due to the high density and pressure, nuclei which are still present, are immersed in a neutron superfluid. One then expects that the dynamical properties of nuclei are significantly affected. In order to estimate the magnitude of the effect associated with the presence of a superfluid medium, we formulate the hydrodynamical approach to the nuclear dynamics in the inner crust of neutron stars. We calculate the renormalized nuclear mass and the strength of the mediuminduced interaction between nuclei. We argue that these effects noticeably modify the properties of the Coulomb crystal in the inner crust.

Vortex Unpinning in Precessing Neutron Stars

The neutron vortices thought to exist in the inner crust of a neutron star interact with nuclei and are expected to pin to the nuclear lattice. Evidence for long-period precession in pulsars, however, requires that pinning be negligible. We estimate the strength of vortex pinning and show that hydrodynamic forces present in a precessing star are likely sufficient to unpin all of the vortices of...

Structure of the inner crust of neutron stars : crystal lattice or disordered phase ?

Structure of the inner crust of neutron stars: crystal lattice or disordered phase ? Abstract We investigate the inner crust structure of neutron stars using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach with the Coulomb interaction treated beyond the Wigner-Seitz approximation. Our results suggest that the shell effects associated with unbound neutrons play an important role and, in particular, lead to com...

Nuclear constraints on the inner edge of neutron star crusts

We show that the widely used parabolic approximation to the Equation of State (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter leads systematically to significantly higher core-crust transition densities and pressures. Using an EOS for neutron-rich nuclear matter constrained by the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions in the same sub-saturation density range as the neutron star crust, the density ...

Nuclear Superfluidity in Exotic Nuclei and Neutron Stars

Nuclear superfludity in exotic nuclei close to the drip lines and in the inner crust matter of neutron stars have common features which can be treated with the same theoretical tools. In the first part of my lecture I discuss how two such tools, namely the HFB approach and the linear response theory can be used to describe the pairing correlations in weakly bound nuclei, in which the unbound pa...

Neutron Stars and the Fermionic Casimir Effect

The inner crust of neutron stars consists of nuclei of various shapes immersed in a neutron gas and stabilized by the Coulomb interaction in the form of a crystal lattice. The scattering of neutrons on nuclear inhomegeneities leads to the quantum correction to the total energy of the system. This correction resembles the Casimir energy and turns out to have a large influence on the structure of...
